KS2 Science – Mixtures & Separation Techniques Today, our KS2 scientists have been investigating mixtures and methods of separation, focusing on the question: How can sieving be used to separate a mixture? The children explored the principle that different materials have different-sized particles and that sieving can be used to separate solid materials according to their particle size. They put their scientific knowledge into practice through a 'panning for gold' practical investigation . Working carefully and systematically, the children used sieves to separate materials, making observations and discussing which particles passed through the mesh and which were retained. Throughout the investigation, they developed important Working Scientifically skills, including making observations, identifying patterns, explaining their results and using appropriate scientific vocabulary. A fantastic hands-on investigation that brought the science of mixtures, particles and separation techniques to life! Well done, KS2 scientists!

Seals Class – Our First Beach School of the Year! Today marked our first Beach School session of the year, and what a fantastic start we had! We began our afternoon with the story The Fish That Could Wish. After listening to the story, the children shared their own wishes with a partner, encouraging them to think creatively and listen carefully to one another. We then got moving with our first activity, listening and responding with actions to different sea creature names. As the children demonstrated just how fantastic their memories were, we kept adding more sea creatures and actions to the list. Next came a very important pirate challenge! Some pirates had hidden rare shells amongst the pebbles on the beach, and the children had to carefully search for the shell treasure. We collected our findings and created a pictogram to show the different types of shells we had discovered. The children then used the data to identify which type of shell was the most common and which was the rarest, developing their understanding of how charts can help us find information. Our Maths learning continued with a game of longer or shorter. We thought about the different lengths of sea creatures and used a metre rule to measure and compare them. Miss Waters and Mrs Stark were particularly concerned that they might end up in the sea while attempting to measure the length of the gigantic blue whale! We finished our fantastic first session with a quick game of "There Is a Space on My Right and I Would Like to Invite...", which was a lovely way to bring everyone together before heading home. What a brilliant first Beach School adventure, Seals! We can't wait to see what our next session brings! #lovelearning #portisaac #outdoorlearning
